Raptors nesting again at devastated Dadia forest
The cinereous vulture is back at the Dadia forest in northeastern Greece. So are other big birds, such as the golden and white-tailed eagles.
The forest was devastated in August and September 2023 by a wildfire that burned about 73,000 hectares (730 square kilometers or 282 square miles). About half the forest area is estimated to have been burned.

Seven hikers rescued from Mount Olympus
Seven hikers stranded on Mount Olympus amid a severe thunderstorm were rescued on Wednesday night.
The hikers, four Greeks and three Israelis, were found by by a Special Disaster Unit (EMAK) rescue team between the area of Prionia and the mountain refuge Zolota.

The unknown inhabitants of archaeological sites
A team of 48 scientists from seven universities and research institutions have begun identifying and recording the many different species of plants and animals that have taken refuge in archaeological sites such as Delos (photo), the Ancient Agora in Athens, Epidaurus and Acrocorinth. Thanks to their special protection conditions, the ruins provide shelter to a multitude of life forms.

Wildlife hospital to be set up on Mount Penteli
Greece's first wildlife care hospital is being created by the Environment Ministry at Rapentosa on Mount Penteli in Attica.
A 4.2-hectare area with terraces and water supply infrastructure and a stone building, owned by the Forestry Department of Penteli, is being renovated to house the care center.

Drones and radars fight illegal fishing
Since 2015, WWF Greece has led an effort to protect Gyaros, an uninhabited island in the Cyclades and a Natura 2000 site which hosts the largest colony of the endangered Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) in Greece.
