Gifts and purchases of Ethnographic Museum 1999-2013
BELGRADE - The exhibition titled “Ancestors to Descendants - Gifts and Purchases of the Ethnographic Museum 1999-2013", showcasing a selection of items collected over the past 15 years, opened on Tuesday evening at the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade.
According to Acting Director of the Ethnographic Museum Miroslav Tasic, the museum's holdings have been augmented by more than 12,000 items from 1999 to 2013. The exhibition will present 170 of these items, which have been selected based on their significance, time of origin, and interesting information on their use and function.
The exhibits on display include apparel, jewelry, furniture, ceramic objects and craft tools belonging to both traditional rural and urban cultures, dating back from the XV to the XIX century.
With this exhibition, the Ethnographic Museum wishes to express its gratitude to the benefactors, and also to encourage new gifts and acknowledge noble intentions of new donors, for the benefit of the future generations, Tasic emphasized.
The author of the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue is the curator of the Ethnographic Museum Jelena Savic.
The exhibition was opened by Princess Jelisaveta Karadjordjevic, who noted that her father, Prince Pavle Karadjordjevic founded the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade 85 years ago.
“Nine years later, the museum merged with the Museum of History and Arts to become the Museum of Prince Pavle, which is today the National Museum", said Princess Jelisaveta.
The Ethnographic Museum also owes a great deal to the gifts and support of the people of good will, who entrusted their most treasured family heirlooms to the museum for permanent safekeeping, Princess Jelisaveta noted.
