Union calls stoppages as gov't tells teachers to make up lost hours

Members of the secondary school teachers’ union (OLME) are to hold work stoppages from Wednesday through Friday in a bid to disrupt the resumption of lessons earlier than scheduled at 571 schools across the country and sabotage an attempt by the Education Ministry to allow pupils to make up for time lost due to weeks of sit-ins.

The ministry has called on the teachers of the secondary schools that were affected by sit-ins to return to work a week earlier than their counterparts at other schools.

But OLME has called on its members to stage three-hour walkouts, starting at 8 a.m., through Friday.

Deputy Education Minister Simeon Kedikoglou warned that any teachers found to be absent this week would face a disciplinary probe.
