Tribute paid to RTS employees killed in 1999 bombing
BELGRADE - Families, colleagues and friends paid tribute to the Radio-Television of Serbia (RTS) employees that were killed in the 1999 bombing by laying wreaths and lighting candles at the monument titled "Why?" on Wednesday.
The wreaths were laid by RTS Acting Director Nikola Mirkov, Chairman of the RTS Managing Board Milan Nikolic, President of the Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia (NUNS) Vukasin Obradovic, members of the families and colleagues of the employees.
After laying wreaths, Nikolic said that the bombing of the RTS building is a horrendous crime.
"I would even say a war crime. Two insanities collided at that place, one national and one international and innocent people got killed. Our criminals were those who did not pull this people out of the building on time. The others, international criminals, decided to attack one country and bomb civilian targets without an approval of the Security Council and in contravention of all international principles," Nikolic said.
He said that it remains to be investigated who ordered the attack on a broadcaster, and on the other hand who failed to give an order for timely evacuation.
"I hope that the commission tasked with investigating murders of journalists will continue working on this case too, and that one day we will know who is to blame for failure to evacuate these people," Nikolic said.
"Even if we need to join NATO one day, those who are to be blamed should be named, and a principle must be set that the media, and civilian targets in general, must not be attacked," Nikolic said.
