Mother of drowned children held in custody

ALEKSINAC -- A 27-year-old woman whose two children drowned on Wednesday in the Turija River in southeastern Serbia has been arrested.

A judge in Aleksinac ordered that the woman, identified with her initials as B.M., be held in custody for 30 days.

She is suspected of committing a grave act against general safety, Judge Vladica Simonović told Tanjug on Friday.

The police brought the mother in on Thursday on suspicion that she did not take adequate care of the children while taking them out for a walk on the banks of the swelling river.

Rescuers recovered the bodies of the victims - a three-year-old girl and an 11-month-old boy - from the river on Thursday.
