All fear what they might find at home
All fear what they might find at home
Veliko Polje, Belo Polje and Sljivica are three villages near Obrenovac that the authorities are in fear the most as to what they might come upon there.
These villages were the first to be flooded by the Kolubara River and the water has still not withdrawn. Yesterday it was two meters high.
Yesterday the special teams could not inspected houses at these locations because of the water.
Sljivica has about 150 houses that are not more than a hundred meters away from the Kolubara. The water started flooding the area as early as on Thursday. However, nobody warned the local people of the threat of flooding.
- On Thursday evening the television informed that we had eight hours to evacuate. We thought we could stay at our homes until morning. About 3 a.m. water started flooding our home quickly and at the daybreak the ground floor was completely flooded – Nebojsa Bojkovic of Sljivice says.
According to his words his family and other 30 people saved their lives by moving to his uncle's house since it is higher. Sirens were on at five in the morning.
Everything else was like in a horror film. Fog, darkness, roar of the water rising a meter every hour and cries of people seeking help.
- We were shouting, crying, praying to God and lighting candles on the terrace. We were doing everything we could only to be spotted, but there was nobody. Water has taken away everything I had but nevermind, I am sorry that I do not have a single photograph of my late mother any more – Nobojsa says. He has three children – Dobrila (8), Aleksandar (4) and Nikolina (3).
The help arrived at about 8.30 in the morning...
