Sports competitions to continue on Sunday

BELGRADE – Serbian Minister of Youth and Sport Vanja Udovicic said Saturday that his ministry has made a recommendation for the resumption of all sports competitions in the country starting from tomorrow.

The minister said that all sporting events were canceled from May 21 to 23 because of the days of mourning for the victims of the massive floods that hit Serbia in days after last Wednesday, and when the flooding was starting, the ministry made the recommendation to the sporting associations to suspend competitions where the situation was critical.

“Now we wish to get back to normal life. We do not want to forget, put aside everything that took place, as Serbia deserves better, but sports is the first thing that can help bring people back to normal life,” Udovicic said for Radio Television of Serbia (RTS).

The situation concerning basketball is rather difficult as the schedule for matches is tight and sports centers have housed evacuees from flooded areas.

Speaking about massive participation of young people in collecting and delivering aid to people badly hit by the floods, Udovicic said that he has always believed in youth and Serbia’s young people responded quickly in this situation, showing humanity in action and showing that it really knows and respects the country, its cities and legacy of the past.
