The self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" has declared martial law to cleanse its territory of Ukrainian troops, its leadership said Monday.

Denis Pushilin, who presides over the Supreme Council of the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk region claiming independence, announced the measure following Ukraine's presidential elections which saw billionaire Petro Poroshenko coming as a winner.

Pushilin also commented on Poroshenko's declared intentions to visit the Donbass region to hold talks with pro-Russian activists who have occupied a number of buildings across the south and east of Ukraine claiming the right to self-rule, with some even demanding that their regions join Russia.

The leader described the move by Ukraine's future president as "not very advisable, because the people of Donetsk are against the candidates" in the election.
