Ponta: Antonescu has killed off USL

"I, too, have heard that Mr. Antonescu does not want us to keep the alliances in the countryside and everybody, at a commune, municipal or county level must try to build a majority, because we have a program with which we ran, the USL program of 2012 and this must be implemented. (...) I believe Mr. Antonescu has killed off USL. He suffocated it. The Truth and Justice Alliance (e.n. — Alianta D.A. — a former political construction composed of PNL and Democratic Liberal Party's (PD-L) predecessor, the Democratic Party (PD)) and USL cannot exist at the same time", said Ponta on Thursday at the end of the Social Democrat Party's (PSD) Executive Committee meeting.

Prime Minister Victor Ponta considers that outgoing National Liberal Party (PNL) Chairman Crin Antonescu has "killed off USL [Social Liberal Union]".

Ponta added that the Social Democrats are waiting to see the result of the PNL congress, keeping their availability for the restoring of USL in case the Liberals want this as well.

"After the PNL-PDL marriage, obviously USL does not exist anymore. If the PNL congress decides otherwise, meaning for a restoration of USL, we are available. But, speaking seriously, it's hard to believe", said the PSD leader.

Of the PNL-PDL alliance, the Social Democrat leader mentioned that "a merger between Mr. Blaga and Mr. Antonescu cannot be a threat to anyone".

"A fission would be a problem, a merger is alright (e.n. — The Premier used wordplay using the similarity between fission and merger in Romanian, the latter term also meaning fusion), because they are two strong political persons and have won all the political battles that they have taken part in until now and I believe it's alright. It's very good", concluded Ponta.AGERPRES
