MEPs Barekov, Dzhambazki to Join ECR Group in European Parliament

Nikolay Barekov and Angel Dzambazki, who were elected MEPs in the European vote, will join the European Conservatives and Reformists group in the EP.

The two politicians, who topped the list of a Bulgaria without Censorship (BWC)-led coalition at the European elections this year, consider this to be "the best proposal" they have received so far, as the Bulgarian National Radio quoted BWC leader Barekov as saying.

"We demand a Deputy Chair seat in a European Parliament Committee, as well as a Deputy Chair seat in the group of our new partners," Barekov also made clear.

He explained that the ECR group was the one with which he and Dzambazki had found most common ground, adding the two MEPs stand for stronger national governments and "Europe of clear commitments", as the conservatives do.

"We have a Europe heading for a pseudo-federation and unreasonable expenditure is made from taxpayers' funds. Let us not think that only in Bulgaria we have a problem with money spending. This problem is far bigger here in Europe," Barekov argued.

Until now, BWC had not declared affiliation to any political family, refusing to point even whether it was left- or right-leaning, thus drawing attacks from different sides that it lacked ideology and was using "populist" means to drain votes from other parties.

On the other hand VMRO, a party in the BWC coalition of which Dzhambazki (in the photo above) is Deputy Chair, on the other hand, is known for its conservative and nationalist rhetoric.

The ECR group retained its position as the fifth-largest within the European Parliament after it gained 46 seats at the vote in May, even though this results was 8 seats down from 2009. Barekov and Dzhambazki would however make its total...
