Syrian President Bashar al-Assad Re-elected
Bashar al-Assad has won Syria's presidential election by a landslide, according to officials.
Assad has gained 88.7% of support in the first vote with multiple candidates held in the country for decades.
Hassan al-Nouri and Maher Hajjar, the other two candidates that stood for election, won 4.3 and 3.2 percent respectively, according to Al Jazeera English.
The Syrian President is to have another seven-year term in office after having been in power since 1999.
Syria's controversial vote was held amid an ongoing civil war that has taken between 100 000 and 150 000 lives.
EU officials have declared they consider June 3's election to be illegal, and US State Secretary John Kerry described them as "a great big zero".
The Syrian opposition also believes the vote was a farce, with the two "alternative" candidates hardly known to the public and announced days ahead of the date.
Turnout was set at 73.42%. However, some northern and eastern regions of Syria, which are largely rebel-controlled, have refused to hold any elections.
