The signing of an association agreement and a free trade agreement between the European Union and Moldova is a very important step forward toward Moldova's getting away from a grey area in which it finds itself, Romania's President Traian Basescu told Jurnal TV in an exclusive statement.

'Friday is the day for the official signing of an agreement under which Moldova clearly opts for a European path, bringing in its own values that became European values and itself adopting European values, acknowledged as thus, and the aspirations of Moldova's citizens: to benefit from prosperity projects, because what the European Union guarantees is freedom,' Basescu says in a message carried on Thursday on the Jurnal TV website.

Basescu also underscores that Moldova will not be welcomed in the European community unless the Moldovan authorities combat corruption in the judiciary.

'You will not be members of the European Union unless you put order in your judiciary. Politicians will not be able to refuse the citizens of Moldova the right to be members of the European Union one day only because they have some interests of their own. There will be public pressure as it was in Romania,' Basescu says in his message, adding that the society will be satisfied only when justice works. AGERPRES
