Exhibition '100 years of races at Careva Cuprija'

BELGRADE - The exhibition entitled '100 years of races at Careva Cuprija' authored by Zoran Lazic will open in the House of King Petar I on Saturday, June 28.

The organisers intend to use the exhibition to save the racetrack from oblivion and preserve the memories of the events connected to equestrian sports that took place during the track's long history.

The exhibition will open by President of the Gallop Association of Serbia Andrija Jovicevic and the ceremony will also feature a performance of the Cinderella quartet and a showroom of members of the Beograd old-timer club who will present their vehicles such as the 1924 Ford, 1927 Citroen, 1936 Chrysler and 1950 Mercedes.

The first equestrian races resembling European races were organised in Belgrade at the racetrack near Carski Drum in 1863 thanks to the efforts of prince Mihailo Obrenovic. Shortly afterwards, the races were organised in Bara Venecija and as of 1891, the races took place at Banjicko Polje, where the first Serbian Derby was staged.

As of 1914 to this day, races are organised at the racetrack near Careva Cuprija.

The exhibition will be open until July 12.
