PM expects Barroso to back Serbia's EU entry

OBRENOVAC - Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic has said that he expects that, during Sunday's meeting in Belgrade, President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso will give clear backing to Serbia's EU accession.

“I expect a clear European perspective for Serbia and clear support for Serbia along the EU path,” Vucic told reporters in Obrenovac, when asked about his expectations in relation to Sunday's visit by the European Commission president.

On Sunday, First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic will welcome Barroso who will then meet Prime Minister Vucic at the Palace of Serbia, and Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic later in the day.

Serbia is a very important country to the EU and it has made significant progress in European integration, Barroso told a Tanjug correspondent during a press briefing in Brussels.

Barroso pointed out that it would be his second visit to Belgrade in his capacity as EC president.

I also plan to visit other countries in the region that have made progress on their European path, said Barroso, who will travel to Tirana following his visit to Belgrade.
