PNL's Antonescu: There was no coup d'etat in 2012
Liberal (PNL) senator Crin Antonescu on Thursday stated, in response to a statement made by President Traian Basescu that the National Liberal Party (PNL) should publicly regret the "coup d'etat" of 2012, that there was no coup d'etat in 2012 and what is to be remembered of that "dramatic" summer is the people's wish expressed in an "overwhelming referendum."
"There was no coup d'etat in 2012 and what is to be remembered of that dramatic summer is far more than what Mr. Basescu attempted to say, yet again, today. Namely, the people's wish, democratically expressed during the course of an overwhelming referendum, that left no room for interpretation, muddling, or comments such as those made by Mr. Basescu", said Antonescu at the end of the extraordinary session of Senate.
Antonescu added that the interpretation given by the head of state to the political events of the summer of 2012 is neither correct or democratic. It was not correct back then and today either.
"We have a more than questionable decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the suspension process, the conduit of the dismissal referendum, that wouldn't have been respected, if it really was a coup d'etat or a sidestepping of the rule of law. Whereas, despite seven and a half million votes, this decision made by six persons was respected, because that's what the rule of law says, that Basescu was reinstated, and for this reason I believe that PNL should not present apologies and that the interpretation given now by President Traian Basescu is neither correct or democratic", said the Liberal senator.
