Floods Cause Havoc in Bulgarian Resort

Torrential rains in Bulgaria have caused the rivers Ropotamo and Dyavolska to overflow and flood the Black Sea town of Primorsko.

The Dyavolska river flooded one of Primorsko’s beaches, thus forming two separate ones. The water carried a café and a vehicle into the sea.

Hotels and residential buildings in Primorsko also suffered from the flooding and hundreds of tourists were left without electricity due to power cuts. However, tourists are not being evacuated from the resort.

The road connecting the seaside towns Primorsko and Sozopol is currently closed for traffic and Primorsko can be reached only by heavy machinery because its streets are under water.

Other roads in the region have been affected and police in Burgas advised people to avoid travelling to the municipalities of Sozopol, Primorsko, and Tsarevo. No casualties were reported so far.

The floods in Bulgaria come after torrential rain devastated large parts of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina in May, causing casualties and forcing tens of thousands from their homes.

An international donors conference opened in Brussels on Wednesday aimed at riasing funds to help the two countries get back on their feet. Bosnia has said the floods caused damage worth 2 billion euro.
