German Minister for Internal Affairs Thomas de Maiziere People from Serbia have no chance to get asylum in Germany
BELGRADE: Germany’s Internal Affairs Minister Thomas de Maiziere spoke to Blic about the ways of helping Serbia on its way to the EU and solving the problem of asylum seekers.
He visited Albania and Serbia together with his French colleague Bernard Cazeneuve – something that never happened before.
As De Maizere explained to Blic, the motif for the joint visit with his French colleague was to bring the Western Balkans states closer to the EU. According to him, the process was agreed on the political level and this year important foundations have been laid in that process.
“Accession talks with Serbia officially started in January and at the end of June Albania was granted the EU candidate status”, he said.
“Considering the fact that the number of asylum seekers from Western Balkans countries is on the rise, on the occasion of my visit I wanted to ensure that measures against illegal migrations would be taken by my conversation partners”, De Maiziere added.
The integration of minorities and improving in the fight against human trafficking could be some of the measures, he said.
When it comes to asylum seekers, Germany is still the main destination. Some 175,000 people are expected to apply asylum in Germany this year, which will be the largest number in the last two decades.
“In Germany, a foreigner can be recognized as a refugee if the person has founded reasons to fear persecution because of race, religion, nationality, or membership of a particular social group in her/his country”, De Maiziere said.
