PM Erdoğan’s outbursts ‘hurt Turkey’s standing in the world,’ Washington says
Washington has repeated its criticism of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip ErdoÄanâs recent remarks that compared Israelâs military operation in Gaza Strip to the acts of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, saying that such comments âhurt Turkeyâs standing in the world.â
âWe certainly believe comments like these undercut Turkeyâs ability to effectively influence the situation. I completely agree with what Jen [Psaki, spokesperson for the United States] said about how offensive and awful these comments were and they quite frankly hurt Turkeyâs international standing,â Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf said on July 21, referring to Spokesperson Psakiâs recent statement.
ErdoÄan has been using extremely strong language against Israel throughout the ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza, while also chiding the U.S.
âThey [Israel] always curse Hitler, but they now even exceed him in barbarism. Some Americans ask why does the prime minister [ErdoÄan] make such comparisons with Hitler? Whatâs that to you? Youâre America, whatâs Hitler to do with you?â ErdoÄan said on July 19. One day after that, he claimed âItâs America who is offensiveâ regarding the response to the bloodshed in Gaza.
After Psaki had previously described ErdoÄanâs words as âoffensive and wrongâ on July 18, her deputy Harf revisited the issue following a question during a daily press briefing on July 21.
âYou can use your influence with Hamas without saying horribly offensive things,â Harf said.
