Turkey’s population ‘to be 86 million in 2030’

Turkey’s population is expected to be higher than 86.8 million as of 2030, with an increase of more than 10 million, according to a report released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The UNDP’s Human Development Report 2014 titled “Sustaining Human Progress: Reducing Vulnerabilities and Building Resilience” predicted that Turkey’s population will be more than 86.8 million in 2030. According to Turkey’s statistics institution’s data, the country’s population surpassed 76.6 million as of 2013.

Some other data about the Turkey given by the report are as following: Inequality in life expectancy is 11 percent, coefficient of human inequality is 15.6 percent, inequality in education is 14.1 percent and inequality in income is 21.8 percent, according to the 2013 data.

The report also said 1.2 billion people live with $1.25 or less a day, according to income-based measures of poverty. However, the UNDP Multidimensional Poverty Index’s latest estimates reveal that almost 1.5 billion people in 91 developing countries are living in poverty with overlapping deprivations in health, education and living standards. And although poverty is declining overall, almost 800 million people are at risk of falling back into poverty if setbacks occur.

“By addressing vulnerabilities, all people may share in developmental progress and human development will become increasingly equitable and sustainable,” said UNDP Administrator Helen Clark Aug. 3.
