Talks with IMF will be continued

NOVI SAD - Governor of the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Jorgovanka Tabakovic said Sunday that the country’s talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were expected to resume in the fall, after the adoption of a revised budget.

“That arrangement is indeed important to us, as it tends to have a positive impact on investors's outlooks and they are much needed here and it represents a confirmation of credibility of the economic policy lead by the country (entering the arrangement),” Tabakovic said for Novi Sad-based daily Dnevnik.

She believes that the success of the talks with the IMF on a new arrangement with Serbia will depend primarily on “the implementation of measures that we will adopt” and “our willingness to show that we are a country capable of pursuing a responsible and sustainable and fiscal policy despite massive challenges.”

Tabakovic said that by adopting important reform legislation, the Serbian government had showed determination to carry out the necessary and long-postponed measures.

The NBS governor pointed out that the consistency and perseverance in the implementation of fiscal consolidation measures and structural reforms would make Serbia safe from repeating others' mistakes.
