Panathinaikos held in Super League opener, loses striker Berg to injury

Panathinaikos suffered a traumatic debut in the Super League on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Levadiakos and lost star striker Marcus Berg for up to three months.

The Swedish player fell awkwardly following a 58th minute challenge at the Olympic Stadium and suffered a fractured collar bone. He will reportedly undergo surgery and be out of action for two to three months.

There was also a disappointing start for PAOK, which was held to a 1-1 home draw by Kalloni.

Champion Olympiakos got off to a strong opening with a 3-1 win over Niki Volou in Piraeus.

In the other games, Kerkyra beat Panthrakikos 2-1, OFI overcame Panaitolikos 1-0, Atromitos held off Platanias 1-0, Veria edged past Xanthi 3-2 and PAS Giannina disposed of Asteras Tripolis 3-1.

Panionios hosts Ergotelis on Monday night to round off the first series of matches in this year’s Super League.
