Claims of data theft by Marathon mayor prompt police probe
The polices forensics department was on Thursday examining the contents of a computer hard drive and four memory sticks that were confiscated following raids on the homes of former municipal officials of Marathon, northeastern Attica, after the current mayor, Ilias Psinakis, claimed that several files had been deleted from the town hall archives.
Police raided five homes on Wednesday four belonging to former municipal officials and one to a former associate after the claims by Psinakis prompted a prosecutor to order an investigation.
Psinakis, a former television celebrity who assumed his post earlier this month after being elected in local authority polls in May, alleged that electronic data were copied by the suspects and then removed from the local authoritys computers.
