Beaten German citizen wakes up

BELGRADE - A German citizen, D.H. (27), who suffered serious injuries after being attacked in downtown Belgrade in the night between Friday and Saturday, woke up following a surgery at the Emergency Center of the Clinical Center of Serbia.

"The young man from Germany who got beaten in Belgrade last night is aware of his surroundings, moves his hands and feet and is able to speak," Miljko Ristic, director of the Belgrade-based Clinical Center of Serbia, told Tanjug.

The patient who was operated on in the Neurosurgery Room last night had a brain hemorrhage and the hematoma was removed, said Dr. Ristic.
"He was taken off the respirator in the morning, he is communicative, aware of his surroundings, and the postoperative course is fairly uneventful," Ristic said, adding that the patient was "in good condition."

The attack on the German citizen, who arrived in Belgrade for participation in a conference on LGBT rights, occurred in Brankova Street at around 3 a.m. Saturday.

Dusan Jovanovic, assistant director at the Emergency Center, told Tanjug earlier that the young man was brought to the center with serious injuries to the head and body.
