Economic recovery through legal certainty and predictability

BELGRADE - Serbian Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic said Thursday that the key for the economic recovery is to create a better business environment for investors, which implies a clear picture of the potential outcome of future investments, both from the economic and the legal aspect.

Legal certainty and predictability are crucial for the recovery of economy, which is one of the Serbian government's top priorities, said Selakovic, stressing that the Ministry of Justice focused its activities on the full implementation of these principles.

Speaking at the opening of the two-day Congress of Jurists of Europe and the Mediterranean, held at the Belgrade Faculty of Laws, Selakovic pointed to the strategic goals set out in the national judicial reform strategy from 2013 to 2018, as well as the national anti-corruption strategy covering the same period.

"Our goal is to facilitate the investors' business activities in several important steps, and ensure faster, simpler and safer document management procedures, simple and reliable extrajudicial resolution of disputes, prompt completion of legal proceedings - should it come to them, and efficient enforcement of court rulings by which the proceedings are ended," the minister said.

The goal that underpins all others is "zero tolerance" for corruption and its elimination at all levels, stressed Selakovic.

The Congress of Jurists of Europe and the Mediterranean focuses on the debate on the role of law in the economic and social progress from 2008 to date.

The congress underlines the contribution of the continental law to economic prosperity and social harmony, and the main topic of this year's event is 'Justice and Economic Growth'.
