Montenegrin and Albanian Pupils Clash at School
At least six pupils were injured after a mass brawl erupted on Wednesday between the Albanian and Montenegrin pupils at an ethnically-mixed high school in Tuzi, a suburb of the Montenegrin capital.
The violence, which involved several dozen pupils, broke out after a few Albanian pupils came to school dressed in red T-shirts with Albanian symbols.
They were celebrating the incident at the football match in Belgrade between Serbia and Albania on Tuesday which was abandoned after a drone flying an Albanian flag over the pitch sparked a brawl between the teams.
Animosity between Albanian and Montenegrin students has led to a number of serious conflicts in the past few years in Tuzi, where ethnic Albanians make up the majority of the local population.
Montenegrin police have launched an investigation and said they would check claims by two students and one parent that during the fight a police officer "used excessive force" and hurt them. No one was arrested.
"We will investigate those claims and the state prosecutor in Podgorica has already been informed," the police said in a statement.
The first football match ever held between Albania and Serbia ended in chaos after the drone flew over the pitch with a banner portraying a map of ‘Greater Albania' and the portraits of independent Albania's two founding fathers, Ismail Qemali and Isa Boletini.
Dozens of Albanians gathered on Tuesday in some Montenegrin towns to applaud the Albanian team. Cars drove through the streets decorated with Albanian flags, while sirens and fireworks could be heard and seen in the towns of Plav, Ulcinj and Tuzi, which have majority Albanian populations.
