Screening on agriculture ends

BRUSSELS - The final part of the screening on the chapter on agriculture in the Serbia's negotiating talks ended in Brussels on Friday, and State Secretary of the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture Danilo Golubovic said that Serbia has adjusted almost all its legislations with relevant European laws.

The European Commission informed us that the degree of adjustment is rather satisfactory, Golubovic told reporters after the conclusion of the bilateral screening on Chapter 12 in the EU negotiating talks.

He noted that this is one of the most demanding chapters because it covers elements that have to do with many other sectors such as internal and external trade, environmental protection and consumer safety.

This is why this screening took five days, he said.

Golubovic explained that the list of laws that need to be amended in order to achieve full adjustment to European standards also includes the law on GMO products, the sale of which is currently banned in Serbia.

This was one of the topics we discussed and agreed that full adjustment has not been achieved, he said and added that he is aware the public is very sensitive when it comes to GMO.

Golubovic said that Serbia has a lot of room for manoeuvre because the EU does not have a unified GMO legislation.
