Tariceanu announces support for Ponta in runoff election

National leader of the Reformist Liberal Party (PLR) Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, who finished third in the November 2 first round of the presidential election, on Tuesday announced having been mandated by his party colleagues to endorse Victor Ponta, the candidate of an alliance of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), the National Union for Romania's Progress (UNPR) and the Conservative Party (PC), who came in first.

'I have introduced my opinion to my colleagues that I will unveil this afternoon at a meeting with PSD, PC, UNPR and Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) representatives. My opinion centres on the main objective we have to achieve, namely to win the election by eliminating any possibility of the Basescu regime perpetrating one way or another, and I mean here Mr Iohannis. I have asked my colleagues for a mandate to this end, and they gave it to me,' Tariceanu said Tuesday after a meeting of PLR.
