Kronos Quartet starts world tour in Belgrade

BELGRADE - The famous American Kronos Quartet starts its world tour in Belgrade's Sava Center on Thursday with a performance of 'Beyond Zero: 1914-1918', a collaboration by Serbian composer Aleksandra Vrebalov and renowned American filmmaker Bill Morrison.

The multimedia project inspired by the Great War had its world premiere at Berkeley (USA) and a memorable performance at the Edinburgh international festival.

The first part of the 90-minute concert draws on the pieces by composers from the WWI period - Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and Sergey Rachmaninoff, while in the second part the string quartet performes the original Vrebalov's score. Morrison's film, based partly on archive footage, provides the visual background.

Combining images and music, the authors of this complex project speak without sentimentality and false hope about the cruelty and helplessness of the individual in the Great War.
