Ponta suggests Teodor Melescanu for interim foreign minister

Prime Minister Victor Ponta announced on Monday he has sent President Traian Basescu the proposal that the former head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) Teodor Melescanu should take over as caretaker foreign minister, after Titus Corlatean had tendered resignation.

'I discussed with Minister Corlatean. I accepted his resignation and I sent President Traian Basescu the proposal that Mr Teodor Melescanu fill in the foreign minister's position in the period immediately ahead, organise the conduct of the vote (for president of Romania — editor's note) in the diaspora in line with the legal provisions and the instructions of the Central Election Bureau and the fundamental voting right of every Romanian citizen be thus respected; but all this shall be done by observing the law and respecting the public institutions that will resist till (the election day of November) 16 and obviously after that to the illegal and illegitimate pressure put by the one who in the evening of (November) 16 will be the former President of Romania Traian Basescu', Ponta said at Victoria Palace (the Govt's offices).
