Novi Sad inventor wins European award

NOVI SAD - Stefan Velja, a young inventor from Novi Sad, won the Gold Medal for Young Inventors at the Brussels Eureka competition, Novi Sad Radio 021 reports.

His patent, a stent used for catching and breaking up blood clots, was presented at the International Exhibition of Invention, Research and New Technologies 'Eureka 2014' held in Brussels on November 13-15.

The young inventor from Novi Sad won the main award in a strong competition of more than 60 patents in the area, Stefan's father Jovan told Radio 021.

He also won the prize of the Romanian delegation and the Russian prize of Gorodissky and Partners.

The awarded patent is a stent used for catching and breaking up blood clots that does not interfere with the circulation. After catching the blood clot, the system releases the required quantity of thrombolytics to break it up.

The device aims to prevent the fatal outcome of blood clots reaching vital organs, such as the heart, lungs or brain.

The patent is registered at the national Intellectual Property Office.

Stefan Velja is a final year student in the prestigious 'Jovan Jovanovic Zmaj' high school in Novi Sad.
