Serbian strategy presented to Hague prosecutor

BELGRADE -- Serbia's War Crimes Prosecutor Vladimir Vukčević informed on Tuesday Serge Brammertz about a strategy of the Serbian war crimes prosecution.

Brammertz is the chief prosecutor of the Hague Tribunal (ICTY).

The strategy focuses on further improvement in regional cooperation concerning war crimes cases, and the opening of new cases based on the exchanged information and proofs, the Serbian prosecution stated in a release.

Brammertz and Vukčević discussed further cooperation as part of the ICTY's exit strategy envisaged in the Residual Mechanism (Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals).

They also discussed activities related to war crimes cases, set out in the Serbian government's action plan, upon the European Commission's recommendation, as part of Chapter 23 "Judiciary and Fundamental Rights".

On Monday, Brammertz met Interior Minister Nebojša Stefanović, and commended the interior ministry's fight against organized crime and terrorism.

Brammertz described as good cooperation between the Residual Mechanism, the legal successor to the ICTY, and the Serbian interior ministry, which was also mentioned in his previous reports.

The ICTY chief prosecutor previously visited Sarajevo.

He is scheduled to present his regular six-month report to the Security Council in the second week of December.
