EU Commission to Go On with CVM Reports on Bulgaria, Romania

The European Commission is intending to continue the monitoring reports prepared about Bulgaria and Romania, issuing a single document on a yearly basis, a spokesperson for the Commission has said.

At the same time no specific date has yet been set for the reports on both countries to be published, the Bulgarian National Radio quoted spokeswoman Mina Andreeva as saying.

Previously, reports under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) introduced for Bulgaria and Romania in 2006 were released twice a year.

The next report is expected at the beginning of 2015.

Deputy Prime Minister Meglena Kuneva voiced her pessimism about the next report on Bulgaria, saying the document is expected to state the country is lagging behind Romania on its way to accession into the Schengen area.

Judicial reform and fighting corruption are key issues explored by the reports for both countries, but Bulgaria's document also includes a part on fighting organized crime.
