Arms probe talks for Greek, German prosecutors
A team of German prosecutors is expected in Athens before Christmas to exchange information with their Greek counterparts regarding corrupt arms procurement deals, Kathimerini understands.
The prosecutors are focusing particularly on the sale of 170 Leopard 2 tanks to Greece by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann more than a decade ago. KMW also sold 24 self-propelled howitzers to Greece in 2000. This deal is also being investigated. The two contracts were worth a combined 1.9 billion euros.
German prosecutors searched KMWs offices last month, while authorities in Greece searched the offices of Axon, a company owned by businessman Thomas Liakounakos, as part of their probe.
It is thought the officials will exchange information about what evidence they have found so far.
