Deadlock with Syrian refugees on Syntagma Square closer to resolution

After nearly three weeks of sleeping in makeshift tents on Syntagma Square, a protest by 330 Syrian refugees seeking permission to travel to Northern Europe appeared closer to a resolution Wednesday after 40 members of the group applied for asylum in Greece.
The Interior Ministry has been negotiating with the protesters to accept a compromise solution that would allow them to stay in Greece for six months before their asylum status is reviewed. On Wednesday, 40 of the protesters came forward and submitted applications.
Meanwhile, a register of the protesters revealed that there are 185 single men or women and 145 people in families, including 26 young children. There were no children among the first applicants.
