Sari exhibition open in House of National Assembly

BELGRADE - An exhibition of saris under the title 'SARI: The Magic of Indian Weaves' opened in the Serbian parliament on Tuesday.

The exhibition was organised in collaboration between the Embassy of India in Belgrade and the New Delhi-based Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The exhibits, made especially for this occasion, are taken from just seven of India's states, and reflect both traditional and contemporary design interpretations, highlighting a diversity of natural materials and techniques, as well as an evolving aesthetic and colour story.

Opening the exhibition together with Indian Ambassador Narinder Chauhan, Serbian Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic said that she is especially pleased that the exhibition has now opened in the House of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia after it was put on display in the Museum of Ethnography.

The friendship between our two countries obliges us to learn more about each other through culture so as to additionally strengthen our ties, Gojkovic said.

The exhibition offers a unique opportunity to get an insight into the abundance and culture of India and feel its tastes and colours through learning more about the wide range of weaving styles, she noted.

The Indian ambassador told reporters at the opening ceremony that the exhibition features items of clothing that represent different weaving traditions, and she expressed gratitude to the Serbian parliament speaker for making it possible for the exhibition to be staged in the parliament building.
