Iohannis: Juncker assured me of his full support in matter of Romania's accession to Schengen Area

AGERPRES special correspondent Florentina Peia reports: President Klaus Iohannis has stated on Thursday that the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, has assured him of his full support in what regards Romania's accession to the Schengen Area.

"We have discussed and found that we have the same point of view on the topic of Schengen. Mr. President assured me of his full support for Romania in the matter of Romania's accession to the Schengen Area", said Iohannis in a joint press conference with the head of the European Commission, held after the meeting between the two.

He showed that he has also discussed with Juncker on the topic of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism (CVM), mentioning that in only a few days we will have a new report on the matter.

"We have agreed that this encourages to say that in the coming years during our mandates we will successfully finalize this procedure because Romania has made significant progress, consolidating the state institutions in implementing structural reforms, consolidating the rule of law and consolidating the independence of the judiciary. We had practically identical views in this matter", said Iohannis.

The head of state emphasized that an important topic for Romania if it wishes to be in the EU core is the accession to the Eurozone, a desideratum of our country.

"Without going into too much detail, in a first discussion we agreed that it is a very good thing, to be wished and that we will together in this matter", said Iohannis.
