Vuckovic appointed vice-chair of PACE committee
BELGRADE - Member of the Serbian parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Natasa Vuckovic was appointed on Tuesday as the vice-chair of the Committee on the Election of Judges to the European Court of Human Rights.
The PACE will elect judges from over 10 Council of Europe members countries this year, and the committee's task is to prepare the election by evaluating the candidacy procedure at national level, interviewing all the candidates and recommending one candidate from each country to the PACE, said Vuckovic, according to a statement from the parliament.
Until this year, the election was conducted by a sub-committee that operated as part of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights, but this year, the PACE formed a special committee for the election of judges to stress the significance of the procedure that results in the appointment of new judges to the court in Strasbourg.
The candidates for members of the committee are proposed by political groups and selected from their own ranks, among those who have experience in human rights protection.
