Safer Internet Day marked in Serbia

BELGRADE -- Safer internet Day was marked in Belgrade's Klub Poslanika with a debate about sexually explicit selfies taken by minors, and a theater performance.

Students and teachers from schools in Belgrade were addressed by Sava Savic, assistant minister of trade, tourism and telecommunications, who pointed out that the internet environment offered "countless opportunities for rapid communication, learning, acquiring new knowledge and entertainment."

However, he pointed out, "as the internet becomes an integral part of the reality of children, adults must be able to react quickly enough to follow the process."

"They must know how to effectively influence the protection of children from online risks, but without denying them the opportunities that the internet brings," said Savic.

Advisor to the minister of education Milovan Suvakov spoke about the role and responsibility that we all have in "jointly creating a better internet environment for children and future generations," while Sasa Zivanovic, head of the MUP's department for cyber crime, advised students "to be careful what they share with others on the internet."

In a discussion that followed the students had many questions for Branko Stamenkovic, the special prosecutor for cyber crime, Vladimir Urosevic, the head of the Department for Electronic Crime of the MUP, and Ivan Jelic, the technical coordinator of the Safe internet Center.

The focus of the discussion was the phenomenon of sexually explicit selfies taken by minors, and in particular the possible consequences of posting such content online.
