Police arrest driver of van transporting migrants

BELGRADE - The authorities arrested on Saturday the driver of the van that overturned on the motorway near Leskovac while transporting illegal migrants four days ago, Tanjug learnt in the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After a major police action, the driver was arrested in Pancevo near Belgrade as he was trying to hide from the authorities.

Tanjug learnt in the Interior Ministry that the driver comes from Leskovac, southern Serbia.

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning when the van transporting 54 illegal migrants overturned and careened off the road. The accident left 42 of the migrants injured.

Most of the migrants come from Bangladesh, Algeria, Laos, Kashmir, Syria, Nigeria and Burma, and they have all been hospitalised.
