ForMin Aurescu: Supporting Nigeria's development, an EU relevant contribution to the fight against Boko Haram

Romania's Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu told a meeting on Monday in Brussels of the European Union's Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) that the European Union can bring a relevant contribution to the fight against the Boko Haram group by supporting Nigeria's development.

In a press release issued on Monday, Romania's Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) quotes Aurescu as saying the proposal entails support for education, socio-economic development, human rights and the rule of law, as well the fight against corruption. Aurescu also said that Romania will continue to stay actively involved in the missions of the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy carried out in Africa by providing assistance for various fields, especially for training Police and Gendarmerie personnel, as well as in the area of the consolidation of the state institutions.

'At the same time, the Romanian chief diplomat underscored that efficiency of public administration should also be supported in African countries. In another line of thought, the Romanian foreign minister mentioned a connection between security and development. Last but not least, he underscored the importance of support being provided for the electoral processes in Africa, given that in 2015 alone there are 19 electoral exercises, voicing Romania's readiness to continue providing technical assistance in the area,' says MAE.

The meeting on Monday of the EU foreign ministers also discussed the latest developments in Libya, hailing in the context the positive outcome of talks between opposing camps of Libya that the UN Secretary General's Special Envoy for Libya Bernardino Leon has lately mediated in Rabat and Alger.
