Former President Basescu: Russia will not stop until it reaches Danube mouths

Former President Traian Basescu says Russia will not stop until it gets the control over southern Ukraine, down to the mouths of Danube River, and Romania should be worried.

"In my opinion, the Russian Federation will not stop until it conquers all the south, until it controls all the southern Ukraine down to the Danube mouths. This Crimea ? Danube mouths duo makes them the masters of the Black Sea. Without the Danube mouths, they're bosses in the Black Sea ? but not masters. Because the Danube mouths give them also the access corridor to the heart of Europe," Basescu said on Monday night at the B1 TV station.

Asked whether Romania should be afraid of Moscow, he answered: "not afraid, but it should be worried."

"Look at all the states. They instantly increased their military capabilities ? Poland has launched a massive armament programme; the Baltics enlarged their armies; the Nordics ? Norway, Sweden ? took steps to increase their defence ministries' budgets," the former head of state added

According to him, the West missed the opportunity to stop Russian President Vladimir Putin, who "in one and a half ? two years, as soon as he seizes the right moment, will reach the Danube mouths." AGERPRES
