Chief prosecutor of the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) Laura Codruta Kovesi on Wednesday said the sustained pace in the anticorruption business will continue as long as there are dignitaries damaging the national budget or taking bribes, irrespective of public pressure on prosecutors.

'The sustained pace of the DNA prosecutors will continue. As far as we are concerned, as long as there are public servants or people holding important public offices stealing from the national budget or taking bribes to conduct their official duties, our business pace will be equally intense. The fact that we are currently conducting investigations into 7,000 cases shows us that we still have a lot to do and we will not stop, irrespective of allegations and pressure coming from the public space,' Kovesi told Radio Romania Actualitati public broadcaster.

She also denied allegations that the activity of prosecutors would be influenced by the latest political developments or indications coming from the political quarters.

'The brisk investigation pace is not in keeping with political developments or the wish of some people to bring to the fore cases now or at any other time. I can tell you that the pace has been the same since 2013, with statistics showing that,' said Kovesi.

She added that priority will be attached in the period immediately ahead to the cases where preventive measures have been ordered on defendants. AGERPRES
