Greek finance minister to meet US president in Washington on Thursday
Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis is due to meet US President Barack Oabama on Thursday, Kathimerini has learned.
Varoufakis is in Washington for the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund. He is expected at the White House on Thursday to attend celebrations for the March 25th Greek Independence Day celebrations, becoming the first official of the recently elected Greek government to meet with the US president. Sources say he will have a few moments to talk with Obama and US Vice President Joe Biden at a time when Greece is in crucial negotiations with its international creditors.
Earlier in the day, meanwhile, the Greek finance chief is scheduled to speak at the Brookings Institution think tank on "The Greek economy and its global partners." His presentation will be preceded by an interview with German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble on "Eurozone at a crossroads (again)."
The Spring Meetings will also be attended by former Greek finance chief and current Bank of Greece Governor Yannis Stournaras.
