ICTY: Goran Hadzic granted temporary release

THE HAGUE - The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has accepted an appeal by former Republika Srpska Krajina president Goran Hadzic and granted him temporary release until the end of May.

He will be on release from the time he is turned over to an authorised official of the Serbian government until his return to the Netherlands, the appeals chamber of the ICTY said on Monday.

During his stay in Serbia, Hadzic is not allowed to leave Novi Sad and go out of his home at night. Besides that, he is also prohibited from contacting any of the victims, witnesses or anyone else related to his case, apart from his lawyer.

The Serbian government is responsible for his safety and should arrest him immediately if he violates any of the conditions of his release.

The ICTY denied earlier, on March 16, Hadzic's request for a temporary release based on humanitarian reasons, that is to receive treatment in Serbia after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Hadzic is accused of crimes against humanity and violations of the rules and customs of war in Croatia 1991-1995.
