Pajtic: Elections in spring 2016
BELGRADE - Chairman of the Executive Council of Vojvodina Bojan Pajtic said Monday that the provincial and local elections cannot be held before the spring of 2016, when, due to the situation in the country, a snap parliamentary election should also take place.
"The local and provincial elections will be held in the spring rather than in December, and we are also demanding an early parliamentary election," said Pajtic, leader of the Democratic Party (DS), which leads the ruling coalition in Vojvodina and the opposition in the National Assembly.
Staging the local and provincial elections in December would be a violation of the Constitution, which stipulates that the mandate of council members is four years, Pajtic told the Radio and Television of Vojvodina.
"If the Constitution says that the mandate of local governments is four years, then this period cannot be cut short," said Pajtic.
Speaking about the DS rally held in Belgrade on Saturday, Pajtic said that on that day it was demonstrated that "there is no more fear in Serbia" and that the citizens have a choice, noting that the opposition is "forced to speak to the citizens from the streets, as it is impossible for them to do so through the media".
He also announced that the DS will hold rallies in other cities in Serbia as well, the next being Kragujevac in May.
