EU approves EUR 2.7 million for regulation of Resava

SVILAJNAC - The EU has approved EUR 2.7 million for regulation work on the section of the river Resava running through the municipality of Svilajnac, central Serbia, head of the municipality Predrag Milanovic said on Thursday.

The section is about 15 km long and the work involves construction of new embankments in Svilajnac and two villages and complete regulation of its flow through farm areas, he told Tanjug.

The project is run by the local and central governments, state-owned water management company Srbijavode and the EU Delegation to Serbia, Milanovic explained.

The project will comprise expansion and excavation of the riverbed and embankment construction in Svilajnac and work on the riverbed in the surrounding villages, he pointed out.

The EU helped Svilajnac with EUR 4 million after last year's floods and is the biggest donor, he stated.

"We expect the work to be completed this year and for Svilajnac to have no more problems with floods from the Resava," he said.

The river flooded Svilajnac in May last year, causing more than RSD 1.5 billion in property damage.
