Bulgargaz and Qatargas have signed a letter of interest in cooperating with each other, the Bulgarian government said on Sunday.

Qatargas, established in 1984, pioneered the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry in Qatar. Today, Qatargas is the largest LNG producing company in the world, with annual LNG output capacity of 42 million tonnes.

Bulgaria, which relies almost entirely on supplies of Russian natural gas to meet its needs, is looking for ways to diversify its gas sources and supply routes.

The letter of interest was signed as part of a visit of a Bulgarian government delegation to Qatar.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov who leads the delegation, and the Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior for the State of Qatar Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani signed an agreement for cooperation in the fight against crime on Sunday, the Bulgarian government's press office said in a statement.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister of Qatar declared interest in cooperation in transport, agriculture and energy. Details of potential cooperation on those areas will be discussed on Monday at meetings between the respective cabinet ministers of Bulgaria and Qatar.
