Thompson laid a wreath at the Monument of American Heroes in the Kiseleff Park donated by the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts, reaffirming the support of the fallen for the freedom they defended.
He said people should never believe the noble and solemn occasion of the day is rightfully theirs; fundamental rights and freedoms, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were defined and affirmed at the birth of the American nation. The switch from declaring to winning these rights, he added, required huge efforts as well as the supreme sacrifice of American land, navy and air troops. In short, he said, the American rights and freedoms were protected in the past and are protected in the present by those who are ready to sacrifice their life so that others may enjoy the benefits of freedom, liberty and prosperity.
He also said on this day a tribute is paid to those Americans who place the life, liberty and happiness above them.
Their individual and personal sacrifice, said Thompson, is making our collective freedom all the more precious.
Thompson added that the commemoration reaffirmed a commitment to support the freedoms that the American troops defended.
On this commemorative day, he said, we are honouring our troops while voicing our commitment to fight against apathy and pessimism that would seek to rob the future generations of their own achievements or the achievement of the aspirations of those who fought to make this life worthy of greatness.
