ForMin Aurescu discusses with ECHR President Spielmann in Strasbourg

Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu met European Court of Human Rights President Dean Spielmann on Thursday in Strasbourg; among other topics, they discussed the long-term reform of the ECHR.

According to a release of the Foreign Affairs Ministry to AGERPRES, the two officials voiced their confidence that the implementation of the Declaration of the High-level Conference held in Brussels under the Belgian presidency of the Ministerial Committee of the Council of Europe will boost the involvement of the signatory states and of other structures of the Council to reach the goal of conformity with the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights, as an expression of the principle of subsidiarity.

In this context, the ECHR President expressed to Aurescu his appreciation for the secondment by the Romanian authorities of two legal experts to the Court's Registry, to support the effort of faster settlement of individual cases.

Aurescu voiced his commendation for the excellent cooperation tendered by the Court's Registry in the execution of the pilot judgment in the case of Maria Atanasiu et. al. v Romania; he confirmed the determination of national authorities to clarify the pending issues of compensations for the real estate nationalized under the Communist regime of Romania. He also asserted the openness of Romanian authorities to make the lessons learned about such problems available to any concerned states.
