UPDATE Alina Gorghiu: Liberals propose early elections
The National Liberal Party (PNL) proposes a reset of the political scene by organizing early elections, PNL Co-Chairperson Alina Gorghiu said on Wednesday, adding that the National Political Bureau of the PNL has endorsed a resolution in this respect.
Gorghiu said that Prime Minister Victor Ponta should resign from office.
"Starting from the fact that Romania is sinking these days in the biggest political crisis in the past 25 years, and considering that we not only have an incompetent Government, unable to make decisions necessary for a good governance, but also a Government with major problems, headed by a Prime Minister suspected of acts of corruption by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), we put it to you that the only rational solution is the resignation of this Premier, obviously the entire Cabinet has to resign, as it is confronted with a major credibility crisis," the PNL leader said.
According to the resolution endorsed on Wednesday, PNL believes that the Premier's replacement would not be enough for the progress of Romania and the governance, because the PSD is in a "deep moral crisis, with its single preoccupation to defend the politicians suspected of acts of corruption and justice obstruction."
"The PNL believes that the only solution which is fair, transparent and natural to put an end to the political crisis is the return to the polls: the early elections. Romanians, through their vote will give the right solution, whose first step was made in the November 16 2014 elections (the presidential elections ? editor's note)," the document reads.
